Resveratrol is a constituent of red wine. It came to public attention following a report that French men who drank red wine did not have some of the age related diseases that their American counterparts in the same age group suffered frequently. Resveratrol is also found in small amounts in berries, peanuts and grape skins. The above report has ignited an interest on how we can live longer with Resveratrol

First, resveratrol is a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants are compounds that reduce the number of free radicals, which are waste products of cellular functions in our body. Therefore, Resveratrol has been associated for many years to weight loss and has been also sold as a dietary supplement to help people burn fat. Its ability to slow the aging process has not been proven until recently.

In many ways, resveratrol works in a similar fashion to caloric restriction, a diet plan that involves consuming higher quantities of nutrient dense foods that are low in calories. This diet has been shown to slow the aging process and reduce the chances of developing most of the diseases we normally associate with aging.

The main belief is that resveratrol aids out in keeping certain fats from entering the body and in flushing them out. Aside from that, it has a bonding property that acts with certain bad cholesterol and triglycerides in order to stop them from building up within the body.

In other studies on resveratrol, there are evidences that support that idea of the said compound working on the genetic level by rendering the aging gene useless. These studies are currently ongoing and have not yet been full-proofed. Other evidences show its capacity to inhibit and even prevent some cancers, with more emphasis on breast cancer in women.

One more thing about Resveratrol is that it takes a certain amount of it in order for the effects to be noticeable enough. The consumption of this compound through its natural sources such as red wine and mulberries is not enough.

The ideal dosage comes in the form of dietary supplements. The minimum dosage is at 250mg in order to end up with enough of the compound in the blood stream. All traces of the compound are completely eradicated in about 4 hours, and the dosage takes about 30 minutes after consumption before its presence can be measured in the bloodstream.
