Family Fun In Traditional Kitchens

By Matthew Kerridge

In almost all homes, the kitchens are the center of attention. Families gather here to eat, children use it as a place to do their home or create artwork and friends sit around here to chat and have coffee.

If one room is this important for all of these aspects, doesn't it only seem logical that you should carefully consider any furniture and appliances that you place in to it. For traditional kitchens, wooden cabinets and furniture work the best as compared to things made from other alternative materials.

Lightening is also important in the kitchen. Typically, in traditional kitchens, lights are usually found above the sink and other work areas. The addition of lights on the under side of the cabinets is also a good idea so that shadows are reduced. If you read recipes frequently, a reading lamp might also be a good idea. In smaller kitchens, natural light goes a long way to make the area look more spacious as well.

A pantry is also another essential additional for any traditional kitchen. You should always store non perishable food items at room temperature and places like cabinets and closets are perfect for this. It also makes it easier to find items when you need them. A good working crisper drawer in the fridge and a freezer are also great extensions from the traditional pantry.

Keeping your kitchen running smoothly requires not only the right utensils but also that they are placed in the proper places. In a traditional kitchen, a knife block works great and is much safer than storing knives in a drawer. Pots and pans need to be kept in cabinets with good air circulation. This is so they don't get covered in dust, but they don't begin to rust either. Utensils can be stored in containers on the counter top or hung from hooks.

Maintaining those kitchen work surfaces is also important. Otherwise you would go from traditional to health hazard in a matter of minutes. Make sure the sinks are deep and the water pressure is good enough to wash dishes properly. Never chop vegetables in the area you chop any kind of meat. Use a cutting board, just make sure it is sanitized afterward. If you are composting your food scraps, keep those separate from other foods.

When it comes to counter tops, they are usually the first thing noticed in a kitchen. Durable and easy to clean counters are an absolute must in any kitchen. Choose a nonporous surface so that bacteria doesn't have as many places it can hide and grow. Some suggestions include tile, concrete, stone, laminate and resin.

In the end, your kitchen is all about the cooking that occurs there. Gas or electric cook stoves, either one, work well and get the job done. A single piece unit or a counter top installed unit can be used for anything and everything you will need to do in this room. - 30241
