Wine Notes: Margaret River Wines

By Hoyt Galverson

Everybody knows that for the world's best Cabernet Sauvignon, you need to look at the Bordeaux region of France, but that might be changing soon. You see, there's an overlooked region of Australia, about four hours south of Perth, that's drawing the attention of even the most dedicated Cabernet lovers. Western Australia's Margaret River wine region gets passed over too often, but it features some truly amazing wines.

For visitors to Western Australia, this region has a lot of rewards to offer. There are plenty of opportunities for exploring the beautiful countryside and coast, enjoying water sports, and trying top quality wines. Twenty percent of all fine wine exported from Australia comes from the Margaret River, which is regarded as one of the best in the country.

A big part of the reason that this area offers such good conditions for producing wine is its unique climate. Warm and similar to the weather you'll find throughout the Mediterranean, this region offers the perfect balance for producing excellent wine grapes. Warm waters, wide beaches, and fantastic surfing conditions add to the reasons to check out this area.

Concerts on the Leeuwin estate have been operating since 1985, and range from classical performances to country and blues. Boutique lodges nestled in the forest offer tranquil, pleasant places to stay, or you can try more mainstream lodging. There are options for every taste and nearly every budget, after all.

Majestic lodges and luxuriously decorated private cabins are available, as are bed and breakfasts and conventional hotels. Whether your idea of a good time is a comfortable hotel room close to everything or a glass of fine local Chardonnay on your private balcony hidden in the trees, you'll be able to find the right place to stay. Once you have lodging, it's time to check out the wines!

Cellar door tastings offer you the ability to find out more about the wonderful wines the region has to offer. Make sure to check out local vineyards, and see what wine lovers all over the world are talking about. Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc are all produced in this region, and are all excellent. Vineyard tours are available in many cases, and will shoe you how the wine is really made.

If you're a wine lover, you're not going to be disappointed in these amazing wines - they offer a quality you don't often find elsewhere. Some Cabernet Sauvignons are a little too dry or tannic in flavor, but these are soft and deep, without harsh overtones that will prevent you from enjoying your wine. Try the Chardonnay and the Sauvignon Blanc, too.

If you've never taken the time to visit the Margaret River wine region or try any of the great wines produced there, you're missing something special. This region has so much to offer, from beautiful scenery to the best wines in Australia. When you plan your next vacation, don't overlook this treasure. - 30241
